February is usually a very depressing, cold and lonely month, so on the rare occasion that clear skies and sunshine appear, I like to play my favorite game called ”where the wild things fart”. On this particular day, my wind assist was on top gear and I managed to propel myself over this very dangerous tree stump. Do not try this at home kids!

いつも２月はとても気持ちの落ち込む、寒くて人恋しい月です。だから、澄み切った空に日差しが注ぐ時は、”where the wild things fart”っていう遊びがしたくなるんだ。この日、僕に吹く風が絶好調だったからこの危ない木の上を飛べたよ！良いこの皆、おうちでマネしないでね！！

Hotel New Otani

After a tough and stressful week, there’s nothing like a walk through the lobby of the New Otani Hotel to boost your spirits. This land mark hotel opened in 1964 and is a splendid reminder of how amazing Tokyo must have been back then, this is after all the hotel that was used in the James Bond classic “You Only Live Twice” and not as many people imagine the Okura Hotel.

As I walked from the newer building into the old and original wing, I couldn’t help but smile and then laugh out loud seeing the elegant sign for “Books & Drugs”, was this a tribute to Hunter S. Thompson, William Burrows, Virginia Wolfe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? I guess not, but certainly they would have approved of this genius concept for a hotel store.

I continued on my path to the B1 parking area and yet another giggle, this time to discover a fashion store by the name of “Blue Willis” they actually sell jeans with this brand name on the belt tag, see photo below. The shop has a wonderful Bruce Webber looking fashion poster in the window, if you look carefully, the 80′s looking male model is holding a midget in his arms, I assume they are the little people’s favorite fashion brand.

ストレスの多い一週間の後のニューオータニホテルのロビーを歩く時間は、素晴らしい癒しの時間になる。このランドマークは１９６４年に開業し、当時の東京がいかに素晴らしかったかを物語っている。これはジェームズ・ボンドの名作”007は２度死ぬ”に使われていてホテルオークラを想像する人もいる。

新しい建物から古い建物へと歩いていた時、エレガントな”Books & Drugs”のサインを見て思わず笑顔になって、とうとう声を出して笑ってしまったよ。これって誰への賛辞だっけ？Hunter S. Thompson, William Burrows, Virginia Wolfe それとも Sir Arthur Conan Doyle？違うとは思うけど、この天才的なコンセプトをホテルの中のお店に取り入れたんだろうね。

そしてB１パーイングへと続くところでまた忍び笑い。今度は”Blue Willis“というファッションストア。ここではベルト・タグにブランド名を入れたジーンズを販売している。（下写真）お店には素敵なBruce Webberのようなファッション・ポスターを窓に張り出していて、よくよく見てみると80年代風のモデルが小人を抱えている。たぶん小柄な人たちが好むブランドなのかな。

Syn Studios

Syn studios is delighted welcome koto master Nakagaki Gayo who’s speciality is the 20 string koto, which allows him to play melodies using the western scale as opposed to the 14 string koto which is used for traditional Japanese melodies. It’s also great to have “short shorts” film festival director Keiko Takahashi back at Syn, Keiko is producing some interesting content for VERTU, the pioneer of luxury mobile phone.

Synスタジオは、二十絃箏奏者のスペシャリスト、中垣雅葉さんを迎えました。彼の演奏する箏は、十四絃箏とは異なり日本古来からの音階ではなく西洋音階での演奏ができる。更に素晴らしいことには、”short shorts” film festivalのディレクター高橋敬子がSynに戻ってきたこと！その他にも彼女は、ラグジュアリーモバイルのパイオニア、VERTUの為にとても興味深いコンテンツをプロデュースしてます。

Max

I’m delighted to see that I’ve been featured on the blog of Maxine Van Cliffe Arakawa who attended the Syn opening party in December. I’ve been friends with Max for 20 years and she’s one of my dearest Tokyo friends who’s been here even longer than me. She’s looking gorgeous and still smiling, I love the blog Max, keep it up!
